What makes Russian hard to read, and how stories help

A new alphabet

Cyrillic has 33 letters, and several look like Latin ones but sound different: Р is “r”, Н is “n”, В is “v”. Reading a little every day is the fastest way to make the alphabet automatic.

Six cases

Russian nouns, adjectives and pronouns change their endings across six cases. Reading shows the most common endings again and again, inside the phrases where they occur.

Verb aspect

Most Russian verbs come in pairs: imperfective for ongoing or repeated actions, perfective for completed ones (читать / прочитать). A story full of finished and unfinished actions shows the difference better than a table does.

Stress that moves

Russian stress is not marked in normal text and can shift between forms of the same word (рука́, ру́ку), which changes how the vowels sound. Listening while you read teaches where it falls.
