About Story Languages
Story Languages is an iPhone and iPad app for learning languages by reading stories. On the App Store it is called Stories - Language Learning.
What the app does
You read graded stories in 12 languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. They are graded on the CEFR scale, from A1 up to C2 depending on the language. Tap any word for its translation and pronunciation, save it, and review it later with spaced-repetition flashcards. An AI tutor explains the grammar, and listen mode reads each story aloud.
Why we teach through reading
Most language apps are built around short exercises. We built ours around reading, so the words you study are the ones you met in a story you chose.
Research on reading widely in a new language supports this. A review of 34 studies by Nakanishi, published in TESOL Quarterly in 2015, found that it improved learners' reading comprehension and reading speed.
Starting in a new script
You don't need to read a script well to begin. Japanese stories carry furigana, Chinese stories carry pinyin over every character, Arabic stories from A1 to B1 are fully vowelled with harakat, and Korean comes with a Hangul deck.
Where the material comes from
Japanese kanji follow the JLPT bands and Chinese vocabulary follows the HSK 3.0 bands. Our vocabulary decks draw on open research word lists, including the CEFR-J Wordlist and the iRead4Skills lexicons, which are credited in the app under Settings, Credits.
One app, two names
Story Languages is our brand and website. Stories - Language Learning is the app's name on the App Store, so that is the name to search for there. Once installed, it appears on your home screen as Story Languages.
